The population of Thailand is 69.91 million (2020). Thailands economy is led by agriculture, and its industry is dominated by small and medium-sized factories. There are currently about 122,000 domestically. According to statistics from the Office of Small and Medium Enterprises of Thailand, there are as many as 2.42 million small and medium-sized enterprises in Thailand. There are more than 4,500 Taiwanese companies in Thailand. Among the ten ASEAN countries, Thailand is the second largest economy, second only to Indonesia in terms of gross domestic product (GDP).
Printing industry and packaging industry are the two most important basic industries in Thailand. The Thai government must continue to support the sustainable development and growth of these two major industries, because these two major industries are the indicator industries of Thailands economic growth. Thailands printing industry chain is complete. There are 6 pulp mills and hundreds of paper mills. From papermaking, graphic art design, prepress, output to printing, there are more than 5,000 related businesses in total. The products cover books, general commercial printing, packaging, Newspaper and ticket printing, etc., with a market size of more than 20 billion US dollars, and printed matter for domestic demand and export.
The development direction of Thailands printing and packaging industry, the Thailand International Trade Promotion Department pointed out that the goal is to become the industrial center of the ASEAN region, and the overall market size is expected to be no less than 300 billion baht. If the related surrounding industries are also included, the market size can reach 500 billion baht, covering more than 3,400 companies. The general printing and packaging industry covers printing, pulp, newspaper and magazine media, advertising, design and logistics-related print distribution. Distribution channel operators, and packaging products related to commodity manufacturing, such as cosmetics, food industries, etc.
The Minister of International Trade of Thailand stated that the total market size of the printing and packaging industry is increasing at an average rate of 10%. The growth of the packaging and printing industry depends on two factors, namely, the competition of multiple industries for the creation of brands, especially the application of printed packaging products in the food industry, such as coffee shops, which are specially printed for the creation of their own brands. Paper cups or containers, another factor is the introduction and application of new packaging materials. In 2020, Thailands printing machinery export volume was 3.125 billion US dollars, an increase of 3.25% over 2019. The top five exporting countries and proportions were the United States (30.81%), the Netherlands (18.46%), Japan (18.23%), Germany (9.04%) %) and mainland China (5.86%).
In terms of global trends in the use of packaging products, for example, Western countries advocate the use of biochemical plastic materials instead of petrochemical plastic materials, and emphasize environmental protection. The quality and design of Thai packaging products have been widely recognized by the international market. The development direction of food container packaging products will be the popular use of paper, plastic materials, and packaging materials suitable for microwave heating. For example, ready-to-eat food sold in convenience stores often use this packaging material to make containers, as well as creative scanning. Printing technology can make the pattern of the package more bright and eye-catching, with three-dimensional or simulation effect, and can be scanned and printed on the surface of various materials, and the printed ink also uses environmentally friendly soybean ink.
After the formation of the ASEAN Economic Community, the regional market demand for English-language printed matter has grown significantly. Because foreigners working and investing in Thailand need corresponding information, the Thailand International Trade Department estimates that the printing and packaging market will expand by another 20%. Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam will become the main business development markets, and the printing and packaging industries in these neighboring countries of Thailand are developing slowly, and there is no large investment yet, and the development prospects are broad.
